The village of Fort Defiance, once called Seven Springs, received its name in the 19^th century from nearby fortifications for pre-Revolutionary battles. Tributaries of the Shenandoah River wind through the picturesque rolling hills, dotted with seasonal crops, livestock, vineyards, hiking trails, and battlefields. Several vintage houses served as havens, hospitals, and military headquarters during the Revolutionary and Civil wars; two such historic properties are among the four houses on the tour, which range from the 18^th to the 20^th centuries.
