Experience the rich history of Augusta County, founded in 1738, and the beauty of the verdant Shenandoah Valley. The village of Fort Defiance, once called Seven Springs, received its name in the 19th century from nearby fortifications for pre-Revolutionary battles. Tributaries of the Shenandoah River wind through the picturesque rolling hills, dotted with seasonal crops, livestock, vineyards, hiking trails, and battlefields. Several vintage houses served as havens, hospitals, and military headquarters during the Revolutionary and Civil wars; two such historic properties are among the four houses on the tour, which range from the 18th to the 20th centuries.
